Being in an industry that is ever evolving means that in order to stay at the top of your game as a Pro Makeup Artist, you have to be in the know about the latest trends, products, applications and techniques. For me, I look to other MakeUp Artists, Fine Artists, Fashion, Runways and even landscapes for inspiration, however my long term and number one 'go to' remains to be the covers and beauty segments of Harpers Bazaar.
At the risk of sounding like a total obsessive, I literally have every, and I mean every issue of Harpers since 2013. Yep. I have a library of Harpers Bazaar magazine issues and when I’m in need of inspiration and ideas for makeup looks, I take myself to my room, sit at the foot of the bookshelf and fully submerge myself in stacks of magazines flicking through the pages of the beauty segments, fashion stories and covers.
But what is it about Harpers Bazaar specifically that has me hooked and totally loyal to the publication? In order to clarify even for myself, I have to set my mind back to when I would shop for a magazine years back. What always drew me in were the covers. The aesthetic of them has always been to me, a perfect balance of feminine and chic and always feature iconic women styled in a totally muse like state of being. It made me feel something. Divine.
My love for makeup is the creative expression it allows, but the reason I chose to be in beauty as an artist is because I love to use that creativity to make women look and feel magnificent and that’s what I see in the covers of Harpers. The women look magnificent, sexy and powerful.
When I feel into the images I’m seeing as I dive through the glossy pages, I make notes of the textures, styles and colours that speak to me. I take time to think about why I like the elements I’m drawn to. It can be anything from the way the light hits the shine of a product on the skin, the contrast of two colours that simultaneously ‘pop' along side one another or recognising that the texture of a fabric makes me want to reach out and feel what Im seeing. Then, I take those elements and consider how I can use them in the medium of makeup to create something new and beautiful. There is so much joy in transforming one idea or inspiration into a totally new concept.
